When you consider how important water is to survival, it's amazing that people pay so little for it. Drinkable water is abundant now, but with the rate of water consumption doubling every twenty years, I could see it becoming as valuable as gold and a lot more valuable than oil. This might be good news for the Inuit. With all those icebergs, they could become the next OPEC!

But it's bad news for everyone else. I wonder what the world will look like when the rich start hoarding water. Will they store their Evian water bottles in their wine cellars? Will they stop swimming, and use their backyard pools as private reservoirs? The new growth industry might be in creating lockable pool covers. Instead of gifting his wife with a diamond ring, the tycoon of the future might instead give her real ice—a tray of ice cubes, perhaps tastefully strung on a gold chain.

Or what about countries? As the glaciers melt from global warming, we might see nations stockpiling the run-off in vast, refrigerated vaults. Wars might be fought over the precious resource. I could see the U.S. and Canada going to war over the great lakes—although maybe not over Lake Erie.

Let's pledge to do our part to keep this from becoming a reality. Join us this week in reducing water consumption by taking shorter showers, keeping the tap off while brushing teeth, or using the “quick cycle” on your washing machine or dishwasher. Let's make a future where water is something that everyone gets to use.
