Carpool and be Cool.

Superman can circle the Earth on solar power, but the rest of us saps are stuck relying on fossil fuels to get around. Since we can’t turn back time (again, not Superman) to undo the damage that burning hydrocarbons has done, the best we can do is try to reduce our use of fossil fuels in the future. So the next time you’re off to your office/home/secret ice cave (which might not be there in 20 years if we don’t start cutting carbon emissions now), might we suggest that you carpool? You’ll finally get to travel in the HOV lane without buckling that inflatable dummy into your passenger seat (though you will, alas, lose your last excuse for owning a blow-up doll), and while you’re at it, you’ll help to forestall drowned polar bears from washing up on the Nevada shore. By which we mean that fewer greenhouse gasses—U.S. cars belched out 314 million metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in 2004 alone—equal less global warming, which equals fewer of the ecological disasters that rising temperatures bring.

A 2005 ABC News survey found that roughly 220 million U.S. commuters drive an average of 32 miles each day to and from work. For most people, that’s 1.5 gallons of gas a day, 7.5 gallons of gas a week. If every American commuter shared their ride with just one other person just one week a year, our nation would save 825 million gallons of gas. At current prices, that would save us approximately 3 billion dollars (or roughly four days in Iraq and one Bridge to Nowhere, but who’s counting?). And it’s over 1.6 billion pounds—800,000 tons—of CO2 we’d be keeping out of the atmosphere.

So please, join us in our pledge to carpool with at least one person (or several—take a bus or train to work!) this week. Don’t know where to begin? Google “carpooling” for tons of free resources and websites that will get you on your way to cash and carbon savings quicker than you can honk your horn.
