May the Force be with us!
Week 2: Pledge not to buy Water Bottles (Reduce Disposables!)
With my mighty lightsaber, I strike this last plastic bottle of water from my shelf.
I look forward to a future where I and many others will enjoy sipping water from a thermos instead of disposable plastic bottles. Everyone in the galaxy looks cooler holding a thermos, even the Sith. And speaking of cooler, your water will stay much cooler in a thermos than in a plastic bottle.
Americans ALONE drank more than 30 billion liters of bottled water in 2006. From this day forward, there will be one less environmental warrior adding to that total. Manufacturers used 900,000 tons of plastic to make all those bottles, sending the equivalent emissions of 500,000 cars into our already suffering air supply.
It is true that these plastic bottles are disposable. However, it is also true that it takes about 450 years for one bottle to disintegrate. Our landfills cannot afford to be filled with these burdens.
All Earthlings must take better care of their planet, starting now. With my pledge today to give up water from the convenient plastic bottle, I will be playing only a small role. However, I will encourage others to do the same. All our small, lazy, almost-effortless steps will – together -- make a difference to the world in which we live…and the world for future generations.
Remember, the Force is an energy field created by all living things – not by droids or plastic bottles. May the force be with you.
